Make Your Own Chatbot: Intro to GPTs in ChatGPT 4

Want to create your own custom chatbot? Create your own assistant? ChatGPT 4 makes it super easy – and it’s now even FREE!

Check out my video overview of how I created two chatbot GPTs using ChatGPT 4. Two days after creating this video, Open AI announced that the ability to create and use GPTs will be available to everyone for free! (Don’t see GPTs yet? The feature might take a few weeks yet to roll out to everyone. I recorded this video while I still had paid access to ChatGPT 4).

GPT Case Study: Sunny, Your ASU Brand Standards Advisor

As part of the ASU AI Innovation project, I developed “Sunny, Your ASU Brand Standards Advisor,” a ChatGPT-powered bot trained to be an expert in ASU’s brand standards. Ever struggled to implement brand standards for your organization? It’s not easy! I had (virtual) stacks of PowerPoints that needed to be updated to meet brand standards. Unfortunately, ChatGPT can’t (yet) update these slide decks directly, but Sunny was a big help!

Users could interact with Sunny through natural language queries to receive guidance on applying these standards, significantly reducing the time spent searching through the ASU brand standards website. Imagine having all that information at your fingertips, ready to help at a moment’s notice!

I learned a lot programming Sunny. Initially, I programmed Sunny to use its web browsing capabilities to pull information directly from ASU’s official brand standards website. However, it sometimes generated incorrect information despite being instructed not to. To address this, I converted the entire brand standards site into PDFs using Adobe Acrobat and uploaded these documents into Sunny’s instructions as the primary source of information. This adjustment significantly improved the accuracy of the information provided by Sunny, aligning it more closely with the true brand guidelines.

The creation of Sunny highlighted the potential of AI in streamlining tedious tasks and ensuring consistency in applying brand standards. While ChatGPT isn’t quite ready to handle the graphical elements of PowerPoint slides, it showed promise in providing text-based support and guidance. Sunny’s development has been a valuable learning experience, demonstrating how AI can be tailored to meet specific needs and improve efficiency in various tasks!

GPT Case Study: Dr. Eddy, Your Personal Professor

As an online student in a doctoral program, I have more questions than answers. So, I created Dr. Eddy, a personalized AI professor designed to be an expert in action research and the ASU Doctor of Education program.

As a doctoral student at Arizona State University, I often found myself in need of quick answers, and I don’t really want to bug my instructors more than I have to. Traditional methods of finding this information could be time-consuming, so I created an AI chatbot that could help me out. This led to the creation of Dr. Eddy, a GPT in ChatGPT 4.

Programming Dr. Eddy was code-free and overall very easy! First, I stated that Dr. Eddy should be an expert on action research methodologies as well as the ASU Doctor of Education program (I just had to tell it to be an expert on action research, and I also fed it the EdD program handbook).

Once Dr. Eddy was live, I asked her lots and lots of questions. Dr. Eddy proved incredibly useful in answering questions, providing guidance on aligning research methodologies, and supplementing my study materials. Her continuous support meant that I could get help whenever I needed it, at any time of day.

The creation of Dr. Eddy has had a big impact on me. It has assisted me in my research process, provided insights and feedback, and significantly enhanced my understanding of complex topics (statistics! ugh!). Moreover, it has demonstrated the potential of AI in personalized education, offering a glimpse into the future of academic support. Seriously. This is the future.

For my dissertation, I’m switching my focus to Dr. Eddy. Dr. Eddy will be the innovation to address the problem of practice of isolated online students struggling to connect with professors. By leveraging AI, Dr. Eddy can bridge the gap between students and faculty, providing immediate, expert-level support and fostering a more engaging online learning environment. This approach not only addresses a significant challenge in online education but also highlights the transformative potential of AI in enhancing the educational experience for students!
